Tips for the Lazy Dieter Part II: Hiring a Personal Chef And/Or Using a Meal Delivery Service

At one point in time, I was so busy at work that I had absolutely no time to cook or experiment with new recipes.  I was on the South Beach diet and barely had the time to figure out  what was “legal” on the diet and what was not.  I went to an event and met a caterer who also worked as a personal chef.  I decided to hire her to cook South Beach Diet compliant meals for me on a monthly basis.

During our first consultation, we discussed the parameters of the diet, my food likes and dislikes, pricing, meal options and the like.  I decided to have her cook a month's worth of dinners for me.  She also threw in some South Beach Diet compliant flaxseed muffins for good measure that I could have for breakfast or dessert (yum).

The arrangement worked out beautifully.  I came home to delicious, home-cooked meals and all I had to do was take them out of the freezer and pop them in the oven or microwave to warm up.  Eating healthy, portion-controlled and nutritious meals instead of takeout did wonders for both my waistline and my wallet.  The monthly cost of the dinners was less than I typically spent ordering in, driving through or buying cooked foods at Epicure.  I started to lose weight too.  Unfortunately, the arrangement only lasted a few months.  My personal chef met a guy who lived in New York and decided to move there.

Not everyone can afford to hire a personal chef, of course.  However, many professionals have babysitters or nannies in their employ who have hours of free time on their hands while the children attend kindergarten or nursery school.  They can use that time to prepare meals based on simple healthy recipes you can find in some of the websites listed in my blogroll or in cookbooks.  You could also find someone else you trust to perform that task.

Another option is to have  healthy meals prepared and delivered to you by a food delivery service.  In researching for this post, I discovered companies that will deliver low-fat, low-sodium, heart-healthy, and diet compliant meals to your door.  I even discovered the existence of a company called Fit2Go (www.fit2gomeal.com) that delivers freshly prepared, low-fat and low-calorie lunches and dinners all over Miami at fairly reasonable prices. They list the nutritional information on the packaging for the meals. They even list the WeightWatchers points for each meal.  I haven't tried them out yet, but, based on the testimonials on their website from people I know and the reviews they have gotten on Yelp.com, I just might.

So, even if you have no time or inclination to cook, you can still arrange to have healthy, nutritious and delicious food prepared for you and delivered to your door.  Try it and let me know how it works out.

Peace.
